Tinnitus is not a disease in itself but a symptom of one of many diseases. The patient keeps on hearing a ringing sound in the ear, which may be accompanied also by sounds like buzzing, clicking, swishing or roaring. No modern medicines have been successful in curing tinnitus, though natural medicines can achieve that. Here we will see some easy homecare with which you can treat tinnitus.
Find the Cause
As said earlier, tinnitus is not a disease but a symptom of some other problem which you should first find out. The other problem may be in the ear, or may be in any other organ like heart, blood vessels or brain. It may also include fluid inside the ear, ear wax blockage or abnormal growth of bone in ear, jaw misalignment, disorders of blood vessels, inner ear problems like Meniere’s disease or some types of tumors. If you can get that problem treated, your tinnitus may go. So, as soon as you experience tinnitus, call a doctor. Your doctor may ask you to perform tests like X-ray, residual inhibition, audiogram and evoked response audiometry.
On your own, you can keep an eye on foods or circumstances that trigger or aggravate your tinnitus. Inform your doctor about the medicines or supplements you are taking.
Take Medicines
Some medicines have been discovered for tinnitus, but their success has been seen varying from patient to patient based on the underlying cause. Some of these medicines are tricyclic antidepressants like nortriptyline or amitriptyline, anticonvulsants like gabapentin or clonazepam, etc. But these medicines may show some side effects. Sometimes some antihistamines, anti-anxiety drugs and even anesthetics have been found to be effective in tinnitus. Discuss with your doctor before taking these medicines.

Some commonly used medicines have been seen to aggravate tinnitus. Discuss with your doctor and if s/he thinks that those medicines are worsening your tinnitus, s/he may reduce the dosage or stop them altogether.
Clear Earwax
Earwax built-up can get hardened and obstruct the ear canal, which leads to irritation, hearing loss and tinnitus. In that case, if the blockage is removed, your tinnitus is automatically cured. You can remove earwax with the help of mineral oil, glycerin oil or baby oil. These types of oils soften the wax and let it get cleared by itself. Hydrogen peroxide also does the same work. If you are not successful in removing it this way, get it cleaned by your doctor. Doctors remove earwax with one of many methods, like using lavage (washing the eardrum) or a special instrument for extraction of the earwax or through suctioning.
Never try to clean the earwax with q-tips because they only push the wax further deeper and worsen the condition.
Supplements
Often tinnitus patients are seen suffering from zinc deficiency. So, if they take zinc supplements, their tinnitus is cured. Some more supplements to alleviate tinnitus are B vitamins, folic acid and magnesium. Thus eating food high in these elements can greatly help in tinnitus. A herbal supplement, ginkgo biloba is also a famous natural cure for tinnitus. This is because ginkgo is well known to improve blood circulation, thereby decreasing high blood pressure and humming in the inner ear. But take care of taking only ginkgo leaf extract and not seeds, because seeds may consist of toxic chemicals.
If you don’t want to undergo this problem and prevent tinnitus, you should protect your ears from loud noises. You should also try to reduce stress by taking ample rest and spend happy time with your near and dear ones. Also never clean ears with q-tips or cotton swabs.
If you take these simple precautions, you can save yourself from tinnitus or if you are already suffering from it, you can get it cured fast.
