How to Relax Your Mind and Body
When someone recommends me to “avoid stress”, I think I feel even more stressed out. Some stresses simply cannot be avoided. What we can do is to learn stress coping strategies. There are many healthy ways to relax your body and mind, you only have to choose which one works best for you. Once these techniques become your habits, you will have less difficulties in stress-relieving. Yoga and meditation are perhaps the first stress coping techniques you think of, but we will mention few more activities.
How to relax your mind? First of all, you can keep a “stress journal”, to write down all stressful events during the day and how you felt about them. It takes about 15 minutes a day and it can help you find out what causes your stress. Once you detect the cause, it will be easier for you to cope it. Also, do not keep your feelings to yourself. Let them out: cry, laugh, talk and even express your anger. It is one of the best ways to relieve stress. Don’t be too busy to enjoy activities you like: play with your pets, do volunteer work, write, paint, do the gardening. Make time to do something you really enjoy, because it helps to relax your mind. Don’t think about future, don’t think about the past, but focus on the present: meditate and use guided imagery.
How to relax your body? Physical exercise is one of the healthiest ways to cope stress. If you are a couch potato, get started with walking. Also, think about some everyday activities (yard work, gardening, housecleaning, cooking) as the ways to reduce stress and keep your body active. For a muscle tension relief, stretch. Tai chi, yoga, qi dong and similar techniques actually combine meditation and exercise and therefore they present the best stress coping activities.
