hospice careHospice has different goals to achieve than normal healthcare services; they have to maintain or improve the quality of life for people with diseases or conditions that cannot be cured. The care plan of each patient needs to be updated as per her/his individual needs of physical and emotional pain that usually comes along with terminal illnesses. There are various types of hospice care. Here are some.

Nursing

A registered nurse, in consultation with the doctor, sets up a plan for hospice care. The care may include monitoring patient’s condition, administering medicines, managing pain and offering other health support.

Social Service

Medical social service too is provided by social workers. This includes counseling and finding community resources for helping patients and their family. Some medical social workers even act as patient’s case manager if the condition of patient is very complex and needs coordinating multiple services.

Doctor Services

Doctor is the most important person in the hospice care team to determine the plan of care.

Spiritual Services

Based on the spiritual and religious beliefs of the patient, hospice care may also include support from a clergy or other spiritual counselor for the patient as well as the family.

Home hospice care is also provided which helps the patient with her/his basic personal requirements, like getting out from bed, dressing, walking and bathing. Some aides receive specialize training to assist the patient with more special care while being supervised by a nurse. A home attendant can even help with household chores like laundry or preparing meal etc.

24-hour Care

Hospice care is available for 24/7 and can be obtained by a phone consultation or personal visits any time of the day.

Inpatient Care

It may be required sometimes to shift the patient to a hospital from home because of difficulty in managing a particular symptom in the setting of home. Hospice care can also arrange this service.

Volunteering

Volunteers often become a part of hospice care teams and provide services like carpooling and companionship. They provide support to the patient and their family.

Assistance in Everything

With the progression of a terminal disease, the patient starts losing her/his ability to do even the basic tasks like eating or dressing. Hospice care also includes physical, job-related and speech therapy and help finding ways to overcome lost functions.
