hemorrhoids after pregnancyPregnancy and baby-birth bring a lot of joy in a woman’s life, but they also offer her some curses. One of the worst curses that pregnancy offers is hemorrhoids or piles. This is a blob of flesh inside or outside anus that forms because of the lack of blood supply to the anus because of the suppression of blood vessels due to increased size of uterus and thereby constipation. If you are distressed by the postpartum hemorrhoids, good news for you is that you can avoid it, just by making some changes to your eating habits and lifestyle. Here are some tips.

Dietary Fiber

As you know, hemorrhoids happen due to constipation and fiber is the best food to eliminate constipation. This fiber occurs in whole grains (oats, whole wheat, barley), and nuts and seeds (walnut, almond, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds). Fiber scratches dirt off the inner lining of intestines and adds volume to stools, thereby making the passage easy through the intestines. It’s very important that stools should be bulky in order to stimulate muscles of intestines to push them further. Once you get rid of constipation, you automatically get rid of hemorrhoids after pregnancy.

Fresh Vegetables and Fruits

Veggies and fruits don’t have as much fiber content as that in nuts, whole grains and seeds. However, they have a great stock of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that help in reducing constipation. E.g. pomegranate has very good properties to prevent constipation and thereby hemorrhoids. Also, fresh veggies like carrot, tomato, cucumber, leafy greens, pumpkins, and fruits like oranges, bananas, berries, watermelons etc offer all healthy nutrients to your body to build strength of muscles of digestive tract, improving digestion and bowel movements, preventing constipation and thereby reducing hemorrhoid pain and irritation.

Unsaturated Fatty Acids

Natural fats occurring in nuts, seafood, coconut, sesame seeds etc are healthy and facilitate good bowel movements. Because of these fats, lubrication is offered to bowels and their movements become smooth. This obviously helps in reducing hemorrhoid pain and itching.

Natural Liquids

Including a lot of natural liquids in the diet is also helpful in reducing constipation and thereby hemorrhoids. These include plain water, coconut water, fresh fruit juices, green tea, buttermilk etc. Keep yourself well-hydrated with these liquids and your bowel movements will improve, reducing your piles trouble.

Changes in Lifestyle

In addition to including these foods in your diet, you should also make some changes to your lifestyle. E.g. you should exercise regularly. If you are unable to exercise, you should at least take a good, long walk, at least in the morning in sunlight. Yoga is a beautiful exercise for pregnancy and after pregnancy. It takes care of your body smoothly without any strain.

Also avoid foods that promote constipation in you, e.g. dairy products, processed foods like white bread and other bakery products, etc.
