Lisinopril (trade names are Prinivil and Zestril) is a medication that is used for patients with hypertension symptoms. After myocardal infarction it can be used to reduce complications and also it is medication to treat a congestive heart failure. Patients who suffer from diabetes mellitus, use this medication because it prevents progressing or developing of nephropathy. It can be found in 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg, but the maximum daily intake is 80 mg. This medication is contraindicated in pregnancy because it may increase morbidity and mortality in infants. If a person who uses Lisinopril has diagnosed pregnancy or it is a woman of child bearing age, she should stop using this medication.

And what are the common Lisinopril side effects? Any of ACE ( angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitors, including Lisinopril, has an irritant persistent cough as the most common side effect. When a patient stops using Lisinopril, this side effect goes away, but sometimes it takes weeks or even months to completely resolves. Another  side effect may be lightheadedness or dizziness, usual symptoms of hypotension. Diarrhea, fatigue, headache, increased serum K (Potassium) levels are also common side effects of Lisinopril.

But if a person has effects like angioedema (swelling of the mouth and lip) it can be potentially serious side effect. If angioedema occurs in the bowel it can cause allergic reaction that can be severe. Hyperkalemia (elevated Potassium level) is also potentially severe and serious side effect, because it can cause cardiac arrhythmia and even death.

Once again, Lisinopril is not recommended in pregnancy because it can cause oligohydramnios , fetal harm or mortality. If a woman is medicated in the first trimester of pregnancy, Lisinopril can lead to major fetal abnormalities. Because of this side effect, Lisinopril should be avoidedin pregnancy.

Also, renal function should be reevaluated after a patient starts using Lisinopril just to be sure renal function is not significantly reduced.
